Mandatory Coverage for Scalp Cooling Items in Chemotherapy by Health Insurance

This new act aims to ensure that health insurance plans, including federal programs like Medicare and Medicaid, cover the costs of scalp cooling caps used to prevent hair loss during chemotherapy. This means individuals undergoing cancer treatment will have easier access to this therapy, potentially improving their comfort and quality of life during a challenging treatment period.
Key points
Health insurance, including group and individual plans, will be required to cover scalp cooling items starting January 1, 2023.
Federal programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP, FEHBP, TRICARE, and VA will also be mandated to fund these devices.
Out-of-pocket costs (e.g., copayments, deductibles) for scalp cooling items will be the same as for intravenous or injectable anticancer drugs.
