Easier Student Loan Forgiveness for Public Service Workers

This bill aims to simplify federal student loan forgiveness for individuals in public service. The changes are designed to help more people qualify for the program, which has been largely ineffective, by including a broader range of payment types and employment categories.
Key points
Expanded Eligible Payments: Periods of deferment and forbearance will now count towards the required 120 payments, making it easier to meet the criteria.
Broader Public Service Definition: The definition of public service is expanded to include more professions, such as school support staff (e.g., administrative, transportation, food service), and AmeriCorps and Peace Corps volunteers.
Consolidation and Parent PLUS Loan Facilitation: Consolidated loans will credit prior public service work, and for Parent PLUS loans, either the parent or the student can fulfill the public service requirement.
Flexible Full-Time Definition: The definition of full-time employment is made more flexible for teachers and lecturers, accounting for credit hours taught.
Streamlined Teacher Loan Forgiveness: Certain restrictions in teacher loan forgiveness programs are removed.
