Dolores River Protection: New Conservation and Management Areas in Colorado

This act establishes two new protected areas in Colorado: the Dolores River National Conservation Area and the Dolores River Special Management Area. Its purpose is to conserve natural, recreational, and cultural resources while safeguarding existing water rights and private property. Citizens will benefit from better-managed recreational lands but must adhere to new rules regarding vehicles and road construction.
Key points
Two new protected areas are established: the Dolores River National Conservation Area (approx. 53,187 acres) and the Dolores River Special Management Area (approx. 15,664 acres) in Colorado.
The goal is to protect natural resources like native fish, whitewater boating, scenic, cultural, archaeological, and historical sites, while supporting recreation.
Existing water rights, including those related to the Dolores Project and Native American tribal rights, are protected and will not be altered by this act.
Motorized vehicle use in these areas will be restricted to designated routes, and new road construction will be limited.
An Advisory Council will be established, including representatives from local communities, agricultural users, conservation groups, and tribal members, to advise on the management of these areas.
Private landowners within or adjacent to these areas will be granted reasonable access to their property.
