Imported Seafood Safety: New Inspection and Testing Rules

New regulations aim to enhance the safety of imported seafood by introducing mandatory inspections and testing. This means citizens will receive higher quality and safer products, thanks to more rigorous verification procedures for foreign suppliers.
Key points
All countries exporting seafood to the U.S. must meet American manufacturing and processing standards.
At least 20% of imported seafood will be mandatorily tested, and the first 15 shipments from new exporters will undergo full testing.
In case of repeated testing failures, shipments from a specific exporter may be suspended for a year, and in extreme cases, from an entire country.
U.S. ports must have trained personnel for seafood inspections, ensuring consistency and effectiveness.
Knowingly falsifying test results or mislabeling seafood will result in significant financial penalties.
