Federal Prison Oversight: Enhanced Transparency and Inmate Rights Protection

This new act establishes a system of regular inspections for federal prisons to improve inmate living conditions and staff working environments. An Ombudsman for Incarcerated Persons will also be created to receive complaints and intervene in matters concerning the health, safety, and rights of inmates. The goal is to increase oversight and ensure better standards in correctional facilities.
Key points
Regular, unannounced inspections of federal prisons by the Inspector General, assessing conditions of confinement, medical care, and safety, among others.
Establishment of an Ombudsman for Incarcerated Persons to receive complaints from inmates, their families, and staff, and intervene on their behalf.
Ensuring confidential communication between inmates and the Inspector General and Ombudsman, without monitoring by prison staff.
Introduction of online and telephone complaint submission systems for families and representatives of incarcerated individuals, as well as internal, private channels for inmates themselves.
Prohibition of any retaliatory actions against individuals filing complaints or participating in inspections.
