Research Animal Adoption: New Rules for Dogs, Cats, Rabbits, and Guinea Pigs.

New rules require federal agencies funded by the Public Health Service to make reasonable efforts to offer healthy dogs, cats, rabbits, and guinea pigs for adoption after research is completed, instead of euthanizing them. This aims to give these animals a chance to find a suitable home. Citizens may have the opportunity to adopt animals previously used in research.
Key points
Research agencies must assess an animal's health and temperament to determine if it's suitable for adoption.
If an animal is suitable, agencies must make reasonable efforts to find it a new home.
Animals cannot be placed with breeders, exhibitors, or other research facilities; only with private homes or animal rescue organizations.
Agencies will report annually on the number of animals eligible for adoption and those actually adopted.
