D.C. Inmates Closer to Home: Easing Reentry for Residents

New rules aim to place District of Columbia residents in prison facilities closer to their homes. This will make it easier for families to visit, which can help maintain family ties and facilitate a smoother return to normal life after serving their sentence. These changes are expected to take effect within two years.
Key points
D.C. inmates will be placed in facilities no more than 250 miles from D.C., unless they request or consent to a different location.
In extraordinary circumstances, placement further away is possible, but requires a written explanation to Congress.
The goal is to facilitate family contact and support the reentry process after incarceration.
