Better Data for Cleaner Air: New Pollution Monitoring Rules
This Act aims to improve air quality and protect public health by expanding air pollution monitoring near industrial facilities and in communities. Citizens will gain easier access to air quality data, allowing them to better assess health risks and the impact of pollution on their lives. New obligations for companies regarding emission measurement and reporting will be introduced, and the air quality monitoring network will be expanded.
Key points
Expanded Pollution Monitoring: Mandatory air monitoring around industrial facilities (fenceline monitoring) and in communities most affected by pollution will be introduced.
Access to Information: Air quality data will be published online in an accessible format and multiple languages, enabling citizens to track pollution levels in real-time.
New Monitoring Stations: 80 new multi-pollutant monitoring stations and at least 100 additional monitors will be deployed in unmonitored or undermonitored areas, with a focus on vulnerable populations.
Air Quality Sensors: Deployment of at least 1,000 low-cost air quality sensors in pollution-affected communities to provide local data and early warnings.
Company Obligations: Companies emitting hazardous substances will be required to use the best available emission measurement methods, take corrective actions if levels are exceeded, and publicly report violations.
