Strengthening Student Protection Against Harassment and Discrimination in Schools

This act aims to strengthen student protection against harassment and discrimination based on sex, race, color, national origin, disability, or age. It introduces new rules for school liability, makes it easier for victims to seek redress, and increases transparency and support for students to ensure a safe learning environment.
Key points
Federally funded school programs and activities will have clearer liability rules for harassment, regardless of whether the perpetrator is a school employee or another person.
Victims will have easier access to courts and the ability to recover a full range of damages, including for emotional distress.
Schools will be required to designate Title IX Coordinators and provide them with appropriate training, as well as conduct school climate surveys to better identify and prevent harassment.
Increased transparency: information on civil rights investigations and religious exemptions from sex discrimination rules will be publicly available.
