Increased Tribal Control Over Kansas Law: New Jurisdiction Rules.

This act changes the rules regarding Kansas state jurisdiction over crimes committed on Indian reservations. From now on, Kansas will need the affirmative consent of tribal governing bodies to exercise criminal jurisdiction on these lands. This aims to improve cooperation between state and tribal authorities in law enforcement and public safety.
Key points
Kansas state will require affirmative consent from tribal governing bodies to exercise criminal jurisdiction on Indian reservations.
The act allows federal, state, local, and tribal governments to enter into cooperative agreements to improve law enforcement and combat crime.
These changes apply to specific tribes: the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska, the Kickapoo Tribe of Indians, the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, and the Sac & Fox Nation of Missouri.
The new rules will take effect 90 days after enactment and will not apply retroactively.
