Protecting Wilderness and Rivers in Washington State

This act designates new wilderness areas and protected river segments within the Olympic National Forest in Washington State. Its purpose is to preserve the natural environment, which may affect access to certain recreational areas and natural resources, but simultaneously ensures the protection of unique ecosystems for future generations.
Key points
Designation of approximately 126,554 acres of land in the Olympic National Forest as wilderness areas, meaning restrictions on their use, such as prohibitions on road construction or resource extraction.
Addition of numerous rivers and their tributaries, such as the Elwha River and Dungeness River, to the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System, providing them with special protection against development and pollution.
Ensuring that existing rights, privileges, and private contracts are not affected, and that the act does not alter the treaty rights of Indian tribes regarding hunting, fishing, and gathering.
