Equal Costs for Breast Cancer Diagnostic and Screening Exams

New rules ensure insurance plans cannot charge more or impose greater limitations for breast cancer diagnostic exams than for screening exams. This means citizens will not pay more for tests confirming a diagnosis than for routine preventive screenings. These changes take effect from January 1, 2022.
Key points
Insurers cannot charge higher fees (e.g., deductibles, co-pays) for breast cancer diagnostic exams than for screening exams.
Stricter limits (e.g., number of visits) cannot be imposed on diagnostic breast cancer exams compared to screening exams.
The changes also apply to older insurance plans previously exempt from some regulations.
The act does not require replacing screening exams with diagnostic ones, nor does it prohibit insurers from requiring prior authorization for tests.
