Healthy Families Act: Paid Sick Leave for All Workers
This act aims to grant employees the right to earn paid sick leave to address their own health needs or those of their family members. It seeks to eliminate the difficult choice between income and care, and reduce the spread of illness in workplaces and schools. The act also provides support for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking, allowing them time to seek help without job loss.
Key points
Employees will earn at least 1 hour of paid sick time for every 30 hours worked, up to a maximum of 56 hours per year.
Paid sick time can be used for personal illness, medical appointments, caring for a sick family member (child, parent, spouse, domestic partner), or for issues related to domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking.
Employers cannot require employees to find a replacement when taking sick leave or discriminate against those who use their sick leave rights.
Smaller employers (fewer than 15 employees) must provide at least 56 hours of unpaid sick time annually for the same purposes.
The act does not override existing state or local laws that offer more generous paid sick leave benefits.
