Veteran Support: Suicide Prevention Program for Servicemember Transition

This act introduces a pilot program aimed at reducing veteran suicides. It provides psychological support, counseling, and access to medical and social resources, helping service members transition from military to civilian life. The goal is to improve the mental health and overall well-being of former service members.
Key points
Mandatory three-hour module for service members before discharge, focusing on risks of civilian transition like loss of support, isolation, or identity crisis.
Counseling and resource access for service members with health issues (e.g., PTSD, TBI) and victims of military sexual trauma.
Ensuring contact with a social worker or behavioral health coordinator from the Department of Veterans Affairs within 90 days of discharge.
Development of an individualized medical treatment plan for veterans based on an assessment of their service experiences.
The pilot program will run for five years at a minimum of 10 transition centers, with regular reports to Congress.
