Lymphedema Treatment: Medicare to Cover Compression Garments and Devices

New legislation expands Medicare to cover the cost of specialized compression garments and other devices for lymphedema treatment. This means individuals with lymphedema will be able to receive reimbursement for essential medical supplies, reducing their financial burden related to treatment. The changes will take effect on January 1, 2023.
Key points
Medicare will begin covering standard and custom-fitted compression garments for individuals diagnosed with lymphedema.
Coverage will also include other devices determined effective in preventing or treating lymphedema.
To be covered, items must be prescribed by a physician or authorized medical professional.
The changes become effective on January 1, 2023, allowing claims for coverage from that date.
