Automatic Sealing of Certain Criminal Records

This act introduces automatic sealing of federal records for certain arrests and non-violent offenses, particularly those involving marijuana. It aims to help individuals with such pasts find employment and improve their lives, while maintaining public safety. Citizens can also petition for sealing of other non-violent offenses.
Key points
Automatic sealing of records for arrests without conviction and for federal non-violent marijuana-related offenses, after sentence requirements are met.
Individuals can petition to seal records for other non-violent federal offenses, after fulfilling sentence requirements and a one-year waiting period.
Sealed records will not appear in most background checks, making it easier to secure employment and housing.
Exceptions apply: records may be accessible to law enforcement for investigations or for certain national security or firearms-related positions.
Employers hiring individuals with sealed records are immune from liability for misconduct related to the sealed information.
