Expanding Access to Nutrition Therapy Services in Medicare

This act aims to broaden the scope of medical nutrition therapy services available under the Medicare program. As a result, more individuals with various chronic conditions will be able to access professional dietary support, potentially improving their health and quality of life.
Key points
More conditions covered: Medicare will cover nutrition therapy for individuals with obesity, hypertension, heart conditions, cancer, gastrointestinal diseases, and other ailments, not just diabetes and kidney disease.
More professionals: In addition to dietitians, nutrition therapy services can be provided by physician assistants, nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, and for eating disorders, clinical psychologists.
These changes will take effect on January 1, 2023, meaning citizens can access expanded benefits from that date.
