Eviction Crisis Act 2021: Tenant Support and New Data Collection

This Act aims to establish a national eviction database to better understand the causes and impacts of evictions. It also introduces financial assistance programs for individuals at risk of eviction and supports community courts that help tenants and landlords resolve disputes. The changes are intended to improve access to legal aid and prevent homelessness.
Key points
A national eviction database will be created to collect detailed information on court-ordered, administrative, and illegal evictions, providing a better understanding of the issue.
A grant program will be established for states and local jurisdictions to create landlord-tenant focused community courts, helping resolve disputes and prevent evictions.
An emergency assistance program will provide financial aid and housing stabilization services to extremely low-income households at risk of eviction or homelessness, covering rent, utilities, and other housing-related expenses.
Tenant screening reports will be amended: consumers must receive a copy of their report, and eviction judgments in favor of the tenant cannot be included.
An Advisory Committee on Eviction Research will be established to guide the database's operation, research eviction causes, and disseminate prevention strategies.
