Immigrant Protection: Status for Domestic Violence Victims

This act aims to provide immigration status to spouses and children who have experienced domestic violence from a principal immigrant. It allows victims to obtain residency and work authorization, even if their relationship with the principal immigrant ended due to abuse. This offers them a chance for a safe and independent life in the United States.
Key points
Victims of domestic violence (spouses and children) can apply for their own immigration status, independent of the abuser.
The act provides the possibility of obtaining work authorization for victims of abuse.
Permanent residency may be granted if certain conditions are met, such as humanitarian grounds or family unity.
Termination of the relationship with the abuser does not negatively affect the victim's immigration status if abuse was a central reason for the termination.
