Protecting the Right to Vote in Federal Elections

This Act aims to protect every citizen's fundamental right to vote in federal elections. It establishes rules that make it harder for state and local governments to implement changes that hinder voting, unless such changes are absolutely necessary and there are no less restrictive means to achieve an important goal. Citizens gain the ability to challenge in court any provisions that make it more difficult for them to cast their vote.
Key points
Strengthens voting rights: Every citizen of legal voting age has a fundamental right to vote in federal elections.
Limits voting burdens: Governments cannot diminish the ability to vote unless it's necessary for an important interest and is the least restrictive means.
Facilitates legal challenges: Citizens can more easily challenge laws that make voting difficult, and courts are required to expedite such cases.
Defines impairment: The Act clearly defines what constitutes a "substantial impairment" to voting, even if a vote can still be cast.
