Protecting Farmworkers from Wildfire Smoke and Excessive Heat

This act aims to ensure the safety of farmworkers by protecting them from harmful wildfire smoke and extreme heat. Employers will be required to provide appropriate protective equipment, water, and cooling facilities, as well as offer training and mandatory breaks. This will lead to improved working conditions and reduced health risks for farmworkers.
Key points
Agricultural employers must provide N95/N100 masks or other certified equipment to protect against wildfire smoke when air quality is dangerous.
In cases of excessive heat, employers must provide water and cooling facilities to protect workers.
Mandatory rest breaks of at least 10 minutes every 2 hours in shaded areas will be required during dangerous smoke or heat conditions.
Workers will receive training in an understandable language on proper use of protective equipment and recognizing signs of heat or smoke-related illnesses.
