BLUE Act: Police Funding and Highway Safety Program Restrictions

This act links highway safety program funding to police budgets. If local governments reduce police budgets and reallocate those funds, they may lose federal money for traffic control. Citizens might experience changes in how traffic laws are enforced in their area.
Key points
State and local governments that defund the police and reallocate funds will be prohibited from using federal highway safety program funds for traffic control or enforcement.
An exemption from these requirements may be granted if a written request with justification is submitted to and approved by the Secretary.
The act defines "defund the police" as reducing police budgets below 2000 levels or the previous fiscal year, while reallocating funds to other government agencies.
