Service Academy Nominations: Rules for Vacant Congressional Offices

This act ensures that the nomination process for service academies, such as the U.S. Military Academy or U.S. Naval Academy, continues smoothly even if a Senator or Representative leaves office. This means young people applying to these prestigious institutions will not lose their chance at a nomination due to an unfilled congressional seat. Citizens can be assured that the nomination system remains stable and fair.
Key points
If a Senator dies, resigns, or is expelled, their service academy nominations are taken over by the other Senator from the same state.
If a Representative dies, resigns, or is expelled, their nominations are taken over by the Senators from that state, divided equally.
These changes apply to nominations for the Military Academy, Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, and Merchant Marine Academy.
