Recognition and Compensation for Alaska Native Communities
This act aims to correct a historical oversight by allowing five Alaska Native communities to form their own corporations and receive land. This will grant residents of these communities rights to manage land and resources, potentially improving their economic and social well-being. The act also ensures continued public access to recreational areas on the conveyed lands.
Key points
Five Alaska Native communities (Haines, Ketchikan, Petersburg, Tenakee, Wrangell) will gain the right to form their own corporations and receive land, which was previously unavailable to them.
Members of these communities will receive shares in the newly formed corporations, potentially bringing financial benefits from land and resource management.
Public access for recreational purposes, such as hunting, fishing, and other activities, will be maintained on the conveyed lands, with some restrictions for safety and resource protection.
The act provides for the conveyance of approximately 23,040 acres of land to each of the five communities, representing a significant resource for their development.
It will be possible to establish settlement trusts to promote the health, education, and welfare of community members, with a focus on elders and minor children.
