Easier Access to HIV Prevention Drugs and No Extra Costs.
This act aims to increase access to HIV prevention medications (PrEP and PEP) by ensuring their free coverage by most health insurance plans, including federal programs. It also prohibits discrimination in life, disability, and long-term care insurance due to taking these medications, and introduces educational campaigns and financial support programs for states and organizations.
Key points
HIV prevention medications (PrEP and PEP), along with related tests and doctor visits, will be free under most private and federal insurance plans (Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP, FEHBP, VA, TRICARE, Indian Health Service).
Life, disability, and long-term care insurers will not be able to deny coverage, raise premiums, or discriminate against individuals taking HIV prevention medications.
Public education campaigns will be established to increase awareness of PrEP and PEP, their effectiveness, and availability, and to combat stigma.
The act provides funding for states, territories, and organizations to create and support PrEP and PEP access programs, especially for uninsured or underinsured individuals.
Patient confidentiality will be ensured for individuals accessing PrEP under family plans, so other family members are not informed of their treatment.
