Strengthening gun background checks: longer data retention and broader searches.

New rules aim to improve the system for checking backgrounds of gun purchasers. This means data on potential gun buyers will be kept longer, and the system will search more databases to more accurately verify if an individual can legally own a firearm. This is intended to enhance public safety by better excluding individuals who should not have access to firearms.
Key points
The National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) will retain records related to firearm transfers for as long as necessary to determine legality.
If a determination takes over 30 days, the individual will be notified in writing or via email.
NICS will search additional databases, including the National Data Exchange and National Crime Information Center, for more thorough background checks.
