Kids Online Safety Act: New Rules for Online Platforms

This Act introduces new obligations for online platforms to protect children and minors up to 16 years old from harmful online content and behaviors. Citizens will gain greater control over their children's data and online experiences, and platforms will be required to act in their best interest.
Key points
Online platforms must protect minors from harmful content, such as the promotion of self-harm, eating disorders, or sexual exploitation.
Minors and parents will receive easy-to-use tools to control privacy, personal data, and time spent on platforms.
Platforms will be required to set the most protective privacy and safety options by default for minors.
Annual audits of risks to minors and reporting on preventive measures taken will be mandatory.
Parents will have access to tools to supervise children's online activity, including tracking screen time and restricting purchases.
Advertising of illegal products (e.g., drugs, alcohol, tobacco) to minors will be prohibited.
A Kids Online Safety Council will be established to advise on the implementation of the Act.
