Duty to Report Foreign Influence in Election Campaigns

New rules aim to increase transparency in election campaign financing. They introduce an obligation to report attempts of influence from foreign states or individuals, protecting the integrity of elections. Citizens can be more confident that their vote is not manipulated by foreign interests.
Key points
Political committees and candidates must report offers of illegal contributions from foreign nationals to the Federal Election Commission (FEC) within 24 hours.
Meetings with foreign governments or their agents must also be reported to the FEC within 24 hours, with an exception for official meetings by elected officials.
Failure to report offers from foreign nationals to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is a crime, punishable by up to 2 years in prison or a fine.
Information reported under this act cannot be used for the deportation of undocumented immigrants.
