Election Mail Act: Improving Mail-In Voting Process and Tracking
This act introduces changes to improve the mail-in voting process. It includes faster processing of ballots by the postal service, requirements for postmarks, and the potential for ballot tracking, aiming to increase certainty and transparency for citizens.
Key points
The Postal Service must process ballots on the same day they are received, to the extent possible.
Mailed ballots will be required to have a postmark indicating the mailing date.
Intelligent mail barcodes will be used for tracking mailed ballots (with some exceptions).
Completed ballots will be carried free of postage.
The Postal Service is restricted from making operational changes hindering election mail delivery 120 days before an election.
Ballots postmarked on or before Election Day will be counted if received within 7 days after the election (unless state law allows longer).
