Student Loan Forgiveness for Educators in High-Need Areas

This act aims to assist teachers, school leaders, and early childhood educators working in high-need areas by forgiving their student loans. This allows educators to focus on teaching rather than debt repayment, encouraging service in challenging environments.
Key points
Teachers and early childhood educators serving 5 years in high-need schools or programs can receive 100% student loan forgiveness.
The act covers both federal FFEL and Direct Loan programs.
Monthly loan payments can be forgiven while engaged in qualifying service.
Parent PLUS loans taken out by parents for a qualifying educator student, or by a parent who is a qualifying educator, are also eligible.
Service performed before the act's effective date can count towards the 5-year requirement.
The act defines high-need schools and early childhood education programs, including those with a high percentage of low-income students and Head Start programs.
Educators teaching indigenous languages may qualify even without full state or tribal certification.
Individuals who received prior teacher loan forgiveness may be eligible for additional forgiveness on remaining loans.
