Improving Conditions for Federal Prisoner Parents and Their Families

This act aims to improve conditions for federal prisoners who are primary caretaker parents. It introduces new rules for visitation, free phone calls and video conferencing, and oversight of transportation and searches. This should make it easier to maintain family ties and improve the treatment of inmates.
Key points
Prisoners who are parents can have visits at least 6 days a week, including weekends, for at least 8 hours a day.
Prisoners will be able to make phone calls and use video conferencing free of charge, facilitating contact with family.
A pilot program for overnight visits for parents meeting good behavior criteria and not convicted of violent crimes will be introduced.
An ombudsman will be designated to oversee prisoner transportation, searches, and civil rights compliance.
Rules for strip searches are introduced, requiring them to be conducted by officers of the same sex, respecting the prisoner's gender identity.
