International Violence Against Women Act: Global Strategy and Oversight

This act aims to strengthen U.S. efforts to combat violence against women globally. It means the U.S. government will actively support programs and policies designed to protect women and girls from violence, such as domestic abuse, sexual exploitation, and forced marriage. New positions and strategies are introduced to ensure better coordination and effectiveness of these actions, which can indirectly improve the safety and rights of women in partner countries.
Key points
Establishment of a U.S. global strategy to prevent and respond to gender-based violence, to be updated every four years and made publicly available.
Creation of an Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues at the State Department and a Senior Coordinator for Gender Equality at USAID to oversee and coordinate efforts.
Requirement for U.S.-funded programs addressing violence to be rigorously monitored and evaluated using uniform standards.
Support for local organizations, including women-led groups, in developing countries to more effectively prevent and respond to violence.
Inclusion of child and forced marriage prevention as a key part of U.S. government efforts.
