Support for Biliteracy Programs: New Opportunities for Students
The BEST Act aims to support biliteracy programs in schools by providing grants to states. This will allow students proficient in both English and a second language, including Native American languages, to receive official recognition of their skills. This will facilitate their access to better educational and professional opportunities, and promote linguistic diversity.
Key points
Students proficient in two languages (English and another, including Native American languages) can receive a special recognition on their diploma or transcript.
States will receive grants to establish or improve biliteracy programs, increasing their availability to students.
These programs aim to prepare students for success in the 21st century, enhance national security, and foster economic growth by promoting multilingualism.
Students who gained proficiency in a second language outside of school can also apply for this recognition.
The act prohibits charging fees to students for participating in the Seal of Biliteracy program.
