Mandatory SANE Nurses in VA Hospitals and Referral Requirements.

This Act requires all Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) hospitals and urgent care facilities to employ at least one Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) or a healthcare provider qualified to conduct forensic examinations. After examining an individual for sexual assault, providers must verbally refer them to mental health services. If the wait time for these services at the VA facility exceeds 30 days, care must be provided through a Veterans Care Agreement.
