Naloxone for Veterans and Caregivers: Prescription-Free Pilot Program

This bill introduces a two-year pilot program allowing veterans and their registered caregivers free, prescription-free access to naloxone at Department of Veterans Affairs facilities. The aim is to enhance safety and accessibility of this life-saving medication in opioid overdose situations. The program also includes providing information on support services and naloxone use education.
Key points
Veterans and their registered caregivers will receive naloxone free of charge and without a prescription at VA pharmacies and medical facilities.
Individuals receiving naloxone will also get information on support services, including addiction, suicide prevention, and mental health services.
The pilot program will run for two years, followed by a report assessing the feasibility of expanding naloxone access to immediate family members and through non-VA medical providers.
