Firefighter Retirement Benefits: Service Break Consideration Extended

New rules make it easier for federal firefighters to count breaks in service towards their retirement, potentially affecting their future benefits. The changes apply to both urban and wildland firefighters, as well as those in supervisory roles. Individuals meeting the criteria can apply to have past service credited, provided they pay any outstanding contributions.
Key points
Expanded definition of a federal firefighter to include service breaks for retirement purposes.
Allows past service (from October 1, 2003) to be credited for firefighters who previously didn't qualify due to service breaks.
Requires firefighters to pay any outstanding retirement contributions to benefit from the new provisions.
Employing agencies will be required to make corresponding additional government contributions.
The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) will inform and assist firefighters in obtaining information about their entitlements.
