Streamlining Undersea Fiber Optic Cable Permits in Marine Sanctuaries

New rules aim to simplify the process for installing and maintaining undersea fiber optic cables in national marine sanctuaries. If a cable has already been approved by another federal or state agency, no additional authorization from the sanctuary manager will be required. This could accelerate the development of internet infrastructure, potentially impacting the availability and quality of telecommunication services for citizens.
Key points
No double permits: If a fiber optic cable already has approval from another agency, no further authorization from the marine sanctuary manager will be needed.
Faster internet development: Streamlining procedures may accelerate the construction and repair of undersea cables, potentially improving internet quality and accessibility.
Interagency cooperation: The bill encourages better cooperation between different government agencies on issues related to undersea cables.
