Safe Shelters 2024: New rules for emergency shelters

This act introduces new rules for using emergency shelters during disasters. Registered sex offenders will be required to use designated, separate shelters. Failure to comply with these rules may result in imprisonment or fines.
Key points
Registered sex offenders are prohibited from entering or using undesignated emergency shelters, except to seek information on designated shelters.
Upon entering an undesignated shelter, a sex offender must immediately notify staff of their registration status.
FEMA will designate specific federal buildings or prisons as shelters exclusively for sex offenders during disasters.
Non-compliance with these new rules can lead to up to 5 years imprisonment or a fine.
