Product Safety: Increased Reliance on Voluntary Standards
This new act aims to increase the role of voluntary product safety standards. This means manufacturers will have more flexibility in using their own standards, as long as they effectively reduce the risk of injury. For citizens, this could mean faster market introduction of innovations, but also the need to pay attention to whether products meet recognized safety standards.

If voluntary standards are effective, the CPSC can only issue mandatory standards if they are identical to the voluntary ones or allow for compliance with them.
