Dolores River Protection: New Conservation and Management Areas in Colorado.
This act establishes two new protected areas in Colorado: the Dolores River National Conservation Area and the Dolores River Special Management Area. Its purpose is to conserve natural resources, water, and recreational opportunities, while safeguarding existing water rights and private property. Citizens will gain access to beautiful lands, but will need to adhere to new rules regarding vehicles and road construction.
Key points
Two new protected areas are established: the Dolores River National Conservation Area (approx. 52,872 acres) and the Dolores River Special Management Area (approx. 15,452 acres) in Colorado.
The goal is to protect native fish, whitewater boating, hunting, fishing, scenic views, cultural and historical heritage, as well as water resources and wildlife.
An advisory council, including representatives from agriculture, conservation, recreation, local government, private landowners, and Native American tribes, will be established to advise on managing these areas.
Existing water rights, including those related to the Dolores Project and Ute tribes, are protected and will not be altered by this act.
Most motorized vehicles will only be allowed on designated routes, and new road construction will be limited, affecting access to some areas.
The act does not affect existing private property rights or local zoning laws.
