Biochar Research Network: Supporting Agriculture and Environment

This act establishes a national biochar research network to help farmers and foresters better utilize this substance. The goal is to improve soil health, increase crop yields, enhance resilience to extreme weather events, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which may impact food production costs and environmental quality.
Key points
Up to 20 biochar research sites will be established to test various biochar types across different soil and climatic conditions.
Research will focus on how biochar can help sequester carbon in soil, boost crop production, and improve resilience to droughts or floods.
Research findings will be made available to farmers, foresters, and other land managers to help them make informed decisions on sustainable biochar production and application.
The act authorizes $50 million annually for fiscal years 2023-2028 to fund this research.
