Support for First Responders: Cancer Benefits Expansion

This act expands benefits for public safety officers who develop cancers related to their service. It means that if an officer contracts a specific type of cancer due to exposure on duty, their illness or death will be presumed a line-of-duty injury, making it easier for them or their families to receive financial support. The changes apply to cases from January 1, 2023, onwards.
Key points
Easier access to benefits for public safety officers (police, firefighters, etc.) suffering from cancers linked to their work exposure.
Establishes a presumption that certain cancers (e.g., lung cancer, leukemia) are service-related if specific conditions regarding service time and diagnosis are met.
Allows for new types of cancers to be added to the list of covered conditions based on scientific evidence.
The changes apply to deaths or permanent disabilities occurring on or after January 1, 2023.
