Halting Risky Pathogen Research: Protecting Public Health

A new law temporarily prohibits federal health institutes from conducting or supporting research that could make viruses and bacteria more infectious or harmful. This aims to protect citizens from potential public health threats stemming from dangerous laboratory experiments. The restriction will last until March 2028.
Key points
Federal health institutes (NIH) are banned from conducting or funding research that could make pathogens more transmissible or dangerous to humans.
This prohibition is in effect until March 30, 2028, to reduce the risk of new, severe diseases emerging.
Exceptions apply to testing naturally occurring viruses, unless such testing could increase their harmfulness.
