Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2023: Revised Waiting Periods and Petitions
This bill amends the federal background check procedures (NICS) for firearm transfers. If the system does not notify the licensee of a result, the transfer cannot proceed until 10 business days have elapsed, the buyer submits a petition, and an additional 10 business days have elapsed since the petition was submitted. The bill also requires the Attorney General to make the petition form available and mandates GAO reports on the effectiveness of these provisions in preventing transfers to prohibited persons.
