New dental support and pilot program for veterans with diabetes.

This act introduces changes to veterans' access to dental care. Firstly, it facilitates cooperation between the Department of Veterans Affairs and external dental practices treating veterans. Secondly, it launches a four-year pilot program providing free dental treatment to veterans aged 40-70 with type 2 diabetes who do not receive regular periodontal care, to assess if improved oral health reduces chronic ailment complications.
Key points
Veterans can receive administrative support for dental care provided outside the Department of Veterans Affairs system.
A pilot program will be launched offering free dental treatment for veterans with type 2 diabetes who do not qualify for standard VA dental care and do not receive regular periodontal care.
The pilot program aims to study whether dental treatment can reduce complications of chronic ailments in veterans, potentially leading to lower healthcare costs.
At least 1,500 veterans will participate in the pilot program across five Veterans Health Administration facilities.
