Online Political Ads Transparency: Disclosure Requirements for Digital Platforms.
This law extends existing political advertisement disclosure rules from TV and radio to major online platforms. Citizens will gain the ability to easily verify who paid for digital political ads, their cost, and the audience targeted, enhancing voter awareness and combating foreign influence campaigns. Platforms must also take steps to prevent foreign entities from funding these advertisements.
Key points
Large online platforms (over 50 million users) must maintain a public, searchable file of all paid political advertisements costing over $500 annually.
The public file must include a digital copy of the ad, a description of the targeted audience, the number of views, and information about the cost and the sponsor (including executive officers for non-candidate groups).
Online political ads must clearly and conspicuously display the sponsor's identity, and this information must remain visible when the ad is shared by a user.
Digital platforms and broadcasters are required to make "reasonable efforts" to prevent foreign nationals from purchasing political advertisements in the U.S.
