Animal Adoption After Research: New Rules for Dogs, Cats, Rabbits.

This act requires research facilities receiving public funds and using dogs, cats, or rabbits to offer these animals for adoption after research completion. The goal is to give these animals a chance at finding a home instead of being euthanized. Citizens may gain the opportunity to adopt animals previously used in research.
Key points
Publicly funded research facilities must develop and publicize policies for adopting dogs, cats, and rabbits after research.
Animals will be assessed for health suitability for adoption.
Facilities must make reasonable efforts to find homes for suitable animals, working with shelters or adoption organizations.
Publicly available records will be kept on the number of animals used, adopted, and euthanized.
Research facilities will have legal immunity for adopted animals, except in cases of willful misconduct.
