Ban on Confining Pigs in Small Stalls: New Animal Welfare Rules.

This act introduces new rules for pig farming, prohibiting the confinement of pregnant pigs in overly restrictive stalls. It aims to improve animal welfare and may affect the availability and prices of pork products, as well as farming practices nationwide. Pig producers may receive financial assistance to comply with the new requirements.
Key points
Prohibits confining pregnant pigs in stalls that prevent them from freely turning around, standing up, and lying down.
Requires at least 24 square feet of usable floorspace per breeding pig starting December 31, 2023.
Exceptions include transportation, veterinary procedures, the five-day period before farrowing, and slaughter.
Pig producers may apply for financial assistance to comply with the new standards, with priority given to independent producers.
The act does not override stricter state or local animal welfare laws.
