Allows heavier and larger car haulers on Interstate System highways.

The CARS Act (Carrying Automobiles Responsibly and Safely Act) permits larger and heavier specialized car haulers (stinger-steered combination automobile transporters) to operate on the Interstate System and certain Federal-aid primary highways. This change allows these vehicles to weigh up to 88,000 pounds and exceed standard axle weight limits by 10%. Citizens may experience this change through potentially more efficient delivery of new vehicles, but also through the increased presence of larger trucks on major roadways.
Key points
Movement Authorization: Stinger-steered car transporters weighing up to 88,000 pounds are allowed on the Interstate System and designated Federal-aid primary highways, standardizing rules across states.
Increased Weight Tolerance: States must allow these specific vehicles an increase of up to 10% on standard axle weight limitations.
Guaranteed Access: States cannot deny these trucks reasonable access to loading/unloading points, fuel, repair, and rest facilities near the highways.
