Increased Federal Penalties for Attacks on Officers and Judges.
This law establishes much harsher federal penalties, including mandatory minimum sentences, for the murder or assault of police officers, judges, prosecutors, and first responders whose agencies receive federal funding. It also restricts the ability of those convicted of killing an officer in state courts to appeal their sentences in federal courts. Furthermore, it expands the rights of officers to carry firearms in federal facilities and school zones.
Key points
Significant increase in federal penalties (including potential death penalty) for the killing or attempted killing of public safety officers and judges.
Restriction of federal appeal rights (habeas corpus) for individuals convicted in state courts of killing a law enforcement officer.
Expansion of the authority for active and retired officers to carry firearms in more locations, including certain federal facilities and school zones.
